What Ⲿ means
Ⲿ writes the vowel o in Old Coptic. Old Coptic describes early Egyptian writing that mixed Greek letters with Demotic signs, from another Egyptian script. Prayers, horoscopes, magic, glosses, and labels appear in it; later Coptic kept only some extra letters. Ⲿ descends from a Demotic sign tied to the hieroglyph “Backbone and Ribs,” an Egyptian picture-sign.
Old Coptic writing was developing by the first century CE at latest. Ⲿ appears in the Schmidt Papyrus, a manuscript dated to the first or second century CE.

Questions people ask
1Why does Ⲿ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Coptic block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
