What ⲙ means
It spells the consonant m in Coptic words. On its own, ⲙ is a letter rather than a complete word.
Coptic writing developed to record Egyptian with Greek letters. Attempts to write Egyptian in Greek letters are attested by the late fourth century BCE; signs adapted from Demotic, an older Egyptian script, became standard around the turn of the third century CE.
By the first century AD, Christian use included translating scripture for Egyptian readers. From the Middle Ages through the present, Coptic has chiefly served as the sacred language of the Coptic Church.

1Why does ⲙ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
