What 𑠇 means
It writes Dogra’s independent ai vowel at a syllable’s start. Here ai is the Latin transliteration of the vowel’s name.
The Dogra script developed in Jammu from the Takri tradition, which descends from Sharada through Devāśeṣa. Devāśeṣa emerged in the 14th century; Takri became distinct in the 16th. This wider northwestern script tradition also includes Gurmukhi and Landa. A Dogri book in Takri was printed in 1818; a New Dogra translation of Līlavatī, a mathematical treatise, followed in 1872.
Why was New Dogra made?
To make Dogra writing clearer for administration. In the 1860s, older Dogra and Takri served informal and commercial writing, but administrators wanted clearer notation. New Dogra standardized the script and drew vowel forms from Devanagari because older forms lacked separate vowel signs. It appeared in administrative documents, currency, judicial and non-judicial stamp papers, postcards, postage stamps, and literature.
Why can 𑠇 look different?
Unicode’s code charts use New Dogra forms, while historical Old Dogra sources may show different letter shapes. If 𑠇 is missing or Dogra text breaks into odd pieces, choose a font with Dogra coverage and complex-text shaping.
A technical, heritage-focused writing character; its presence identifies Dogra-script text.
Drift: Dogri is usually written in Devanagari as of September 2026; Dogra appears chiefly in historical study, scholarship, and script-revival work.
