What 𑠡 means

It is the Dogra-script letter transliterated as bha, a breathy b sound. It belongs inside a Dogra-script syllable or word; by itself, it is a letter sample rather than a complete message.

Dogra is an abugida: each consonant includes a default vowel. A vowel sign changes that vowel; a virama, a mark that removes it, lets the consonant join a cluster or end a syllable. So surrounding signs affect the reading of 𑠡.

Where did 𑠡 come from?

Dogra writing grew from older Takri and Sharada traditions. A Dogri literary history reports a Takri inscription at Salhi from 1160 CE. The wider script tradition includes Devāśeṣa, an earlier regional script form that emerged in the 14th century; Dogra use for Dogri is recorded by the 17th century. The Dogra form was standardized in the 1860s.

Dogra script served routine and commercial writing. A standardized style called New Dogra Akkhar also appeared in official documents, stamps, currency, and print. A Dogra printing of the Dogri literary work Līlavatī appeared in 1872. The next shift came after 1885, when Urdu displaced Dogra in administration; Devanagari later took its place in education and public literary use. In 2026, Jammu reporting described Dogra signboards and a campaign to revive the script.

Technical, archival, educational, or heritage-focused; Dogra's public role has shifted toward heritage revival.

Alone, it may look like an unexplained letter sample rather than a readable message.

Why does 𑠡 show as a box?

Display varies by font: the active font may lack Dogra glyph coverage or shaping support. Choose a font that supports Dogra; a missing-glyph box does not mean the encoded character changed.
