Double Acute Accent

Type ˝ alone; use ő or ű in Hungarian words.

In Word, type 02DD and press Alt+X; in GNOME, press Ctrl+Shift+U, type 02dd, then Space or Enter. These methods enter the Hungarian accent mark by itself.

The combining form ̋ attaches to a letter, as in ő; the spacing form ˝ occupies its own character space.

What does the double acute mean in Hungarian?

It marks the longer versions of Hungarian ö and ü. The complete letters are ő and ű; vowel length can distinguish words.

The early 15th-century Hussite model for Hungarian spelling, linked to Czech religious reformer Jan Hus, used small marks on letters (diacritics) to distinguish vowel sounds and drew signs from Czech and Hungarian writing traditions. In the 16th century, Hungarian grammarians János Sylvester and Mátyás Dévai used accents to mark vowel length. The modern forms ő and ű became common in the first half of the 19th century after a long period of competing spellings.
