What ℍ means
In quaternion algebra, ℍ names the quaternion number system. It is a number system used in algebra, geometry, and rotation calculations.
Blackboard bold, also called double-struck, developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s as mathematicians sought a practical way to distinguish symbols on blackboards and typewriters. Writers doubled strokes by hand or struck a letter twice; the workaround became a notation style. Here, the style marks ℍ as a named object, not a heavier ordinary H.
When can ℍ mean something else?
Let the mathematical field and nearby notation decide. In complex analysis, ℍ can mean the upper half-plane: the part of the complex plane above the real-number line. In geometry, ℍ² can mean the hyperbolic plane, where the rules of flat geometry do not hold.
The same glyph does not always abbreviate quaternions; its context supplies the reading.
Technical and academic; outside mathematics, ℍ usually reads as a specialized symbol rather than a message.
Check the mathematical context before reading ℍ as quaternions.

3Questions people ask
1Why does ℍ look different in some fonts?
That is normal. Unicode identifies the character but does not prescribe one exact drawing; fonts can vary in serifing, inline strokes, and where the doubled strokes sit.
