What ꬢ means
ꬢ marks a syllable in Gumuz spelling. It belongs to the Gumuz CCHH series, whose forms distinguish vowels. Alone, ꬢ identifies one syllable in Gumuz text; the surrounding writing gives it context.
How old is ꬢ?
The Ethiopic script is much older than this Gumuz character. The earliest writing evidence from Ethiopia and Eritrea is in pseudo-Sabaean inscriptions from the eighth/seventh centuries BCE; pseudo-Sabaean is the historical name for that early inscriptional script. Ethiopic later shifted from an abjad, which mainly writes consonants, to an abugida, where vowel forms attach to consonant letters.
ꬢ itself is a later, language-specific addition for Gumuz. A Gumuz New Testament from 2003 is cited as evidence that these characters were needed in digital text. The proposal groups ꬢ with other CCHH forms that distinguish vowels.

Questions people ask
1Why does ꬢ appear as a box or look different?
It can be a font-coverage issue: the active font may lack ꬢ, so the system substitutes a box or another typeface. Ethiopic letter proportions also vary by typeface; that changes appearance, not the character in the text.
