What ꬋ means
ꬋ represents one syllable in an extended Ethiopic spelling system. In the Latin-letter label ddhaa, the ending aa identifies this vowel form; other ddh-series signs use different vowels.
Ethiopic is a script in which many signs write a consonant and vowel together. It was first developed for Ge'ez, an older language of the region, and later adapted for other languages. This extended series was added for Gamo, Gofa, Dawro and Basketo orthographies, and to preserve books already printed in them.
A 2009 Unicode proposal records Gospels of Luke in Dawro, Gamo and Gofa from 2005, plus a 2006 trial Gospel from the Basketo Translation Project. Gamo-Gofa-Dawro writing with extended Latin was put into use in February 2003; Gumuz's Latin alphabet was officially approved in 2007. ꬋ belongs to one Ethiopic writing tradition, not a universal alphabet for all Ethiopian languages.
