What ꬍ means
It writes a syllable inside words in extended Ethiopic spelling.
ꬍ belongs to orthographies for Gamo, Gofa, Dawro, and Basketo. Ethiopic writing uses individual signs for consonant-vowel syllables. The specific reading depends on the word and language; the sign has no standalone word meaning.
Encoding it preserved spellings already used in print. The 2009 proposal says these language groups were officially choosing the Latin script, while churches were still publishing books in Ethiopic; encoding the added signs would let those books be reproduced digitally. Its cited examples include Gamo, Dawro, and Gofa Luke editions and a Basketo trial edition from 2005–2006. The proposal also says a trial Gamo page mistakenly used another Ethiopic syllable row, labeled “dh”; Gamo writers used the row labeled “ddh” instead.
How do I type ꬍ?
