What ᎊ means
On the GFF legacy keyboard, press f, then u, i, e.
The GFF legacy layout maps the mnemonic fuie sequence to ᎊ. A generic Amharic keyboard does not include these extra Gurage letters.
What does ᎊ mean?
It writes a Gurage syllable in the f-series.
In the Ethiopic writing system, each character represents a syllable. ᎊ is an added, labialized form in the ፈ family: it records a Gurage syllable beginning with an f sound pronounced with rounded lips.
The printed record for these added letters starts with Sahle Selassie and Wolf Leslau’s 1966 book on Chaha, a Gurage language. The letters recorded Gurage sounds missing from the established Ethiopic set; later Gurage publications and formal standards carried them forward.
Is ᎊ the same as 𞟼?
They represent the same syllable in different Gurage orthographies.
In 2019, the Gurage Zone endorsed the modern Gurage Fider, a writing standard that uses a broader Gurage label. Earlier printed material focused on Sebatbeit.
The two forms are distinct characters, so the orthographic era matters when choosing one. Treat ᎊ and 𞟼 as counterparts for the same sound sequence, not as two different syllables.
A spelling character in Gurage writing; it contributes a syllable’s sound to a word.

Questions people ask
1Why does ᎊ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
