ethiopic syllable fwi

Ethiopic Syllable Fwi

10/26

ᎉ is used in Sebat Bet Gurage spelling for an f-syllable with a w-like glide. Its English label, nearby syllables, and older versus newer Gurage keyboards do not always point to the same reading or character.

What ᎉ means

It spells an f-syllable with a w-like glide. In Sebat Bet spelling, ᎉ extends the Ethiopic ፈ f-family; ፈ is its unrounded base form.

Ethiopic writing grew from a South Arabian alphabet that reached Tigray in the eighth century BCE; the earliest Ethiopic alphabet inscription is reported at Dakhanamo. By the fourth century CE, added vowel notation had turned the consonant alphabet into a syllabary, where signs represent consonant-vowel syllables.

An orthography published by Sahle Selassie and Wolf Leslau in 1966 extended the መ, በ, ፈ and ፐ syllable series with rounded forms. Unicode 16.0 describes the older Sebatbeit-named additions as part of modern Gurage spelling, including Sebat Bet.

Why is ᎉ called FWI?

The English name identifies the character; Gurage spelling sets its reading. CLDR 28, a language-data release, writes the Sebatbeit readings of ᎉ and ᎋ as fwu and fwi: an f sound with a brief w-like glide, ending in u or i. Those labels belong to that data set; follow the spelling convention of the word you are reading.

Some fonts need Sebat Bet-specific, language-aware OpenType shaping to display these forms. If ᎉ appears as a box, select a font that covers the character and its shaping features; the box is a display failure, not another character.

A Gurage spelling character; its use follows the orthographic convention of the text.

CLDR 28's Amharic transform omits this Sebat Bet form; don't substitute ᎉ into ordinary Amharic spelling.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ᎉ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
