What 𞟳 means
The syllable kept its sound as Gurage spelling systems changed.
At UCLA in 1962, writer Sahle Selassie began writing Chaha stories for linguist Wolf Leslau, who needed examples of the language. They adapted Ethiopic letters to write Chaha, one Gurage language; their spelling appeared in print in 1966. The earlier /bwi/ sign remained in the 1977 and 1998 spelling systems.
The 2013 Gurage Fider simplified the spellings for several Gurage languages. Local authorities endorsed it in 2019, and public schools introduced it in 2020.

1Why does 𞟳 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
