What ሖ means
Choose the o-order in a fidel phonetic keyboard; shortcuts vary by layout. The GFF Tigrinya typing table maps ሖ to Ho; that key label belongs to this layout, not every Ethiopic keyboard.
Ethiopic phonetic layouts organize characters in families: the consonant stays the same while its following vowel changes across seven forms. Select the family’s o-order form for ሖ. The exact keys depend on the keyboard layout.
What does ሖ mean in a word?
It is the o-order syllable in the ሐ family. The family keeps its consonant series while changing the following vowel. In Ge’ez, Amharic, Tigrinya, or Tigre, the word and language supply the reading; ሖ alone does not name one general idea.
Old South Arabian, an earlier writing system, was in use around the eighth century BCE. Ethiopic script developed from it; recognizable Ethiopic inscriptions appear from the second or third century CE. The exact route is debated: scholars consider both formal stone inscriptions and cursive, connected South Arabian writing. Vowel notation developed by the fourth century. Historians link that reform and new book-making practices with Christianity becoming Ethiopia’s state religion.
Ge’ez served as a main vehicle of written knowledge until the nineteenth century and became a language used in worship. The script was also adapted for Amharic, Tigrinya, and Tigre.
Neutral as a syllable form in Ethiopic writing; its reading comes from the word and language around it.
A lone ሖ is too little to decode reliably; use the surrounding word and language.
