What ሕ means
It pairs the Hha consonant with the series’ sixth vowel.
Ethiopic writing developed from South Arabian consonant writing, which did not mark vowels in the same way. The earliest writing evidence in Ethiopia and Eritrea includes pseudo-Sabaean inscriptions from the 8th/7th centuries BCE; a distinct Ethiopic script appears in the 1st–3rd centuries CE, and systematic vowel marking develops in the 4th century CE.
Why can ሕ and ህ sound alike?
Amharic can keep spellings distinct after pronunciations merge.
Ge’ez distinguished the Hha-related series as different sounds through the 6th century CE. In Amharic, ደኅና, ደሕና, and ደህና are documented spellings with the same pronunciation.
So ሕ can preserve an inherited spelling choice without marking a separate modern consonant.
