Why was Gurage spelling revised?
The reform aimed to make Gurage easier to read and learn. A formal Gurage alphabet entered Ethiopia’s national standard in 2002; its letters entered Unicode in 2005. Local experts revised the spelling over several years, and the Gurage Zone government endorsed the update in 2013. Before 2013, the older spelling had limited use in publishing and public life.
