What ኴ means
It marks a syllable in a word. The consonant is a labialized k, made with rounded lips and close to kw, followed by an e-like vowel. The language and word determine the exact reading.
The Ethiopic writing tradition has historical links with South Arabian writing. It developed through stages called Proto-Ge’ez, Old Ge’ez, and Classical Ge’ez. Dates refer to different evidence: one account places the earliest known inscriptions in the eighth century BCE; a research synthesis dates Proto-Ge’ez evidence at Yeha and Matara to the fourth–fifth centuries BCE. By around 350 CE, added vowel marks had reshaped consonant-only writing into an abugida—a system whose signs combine consonants and vowels—making Ge’ez writing faster, including for sacred literature. The script is used for Ge’ez and languages such as Amharic, Tigrinya (also called Tigrigna), Tigre, and Awngi.
