What ኲ means
It marks a syllable; the word around it carries the meaning. kwi is its conventional Latin label, not a promise of the same pronunciation in every language. The sign belongs to the series for a K made with rounded lips, and it occupies the i-vowel position.
The sign belongs to an evolving writing system. South Arabian writing reached the region around the 8th century BCE. The local Ethiopic script developed around the 1st–3rd centuries CE. Around the 4th century CE, vowel notation reshaped older consonant writing into an abugida, a system whose basic signs combine consonants and vowels.
The script was developed for Ge'ez, an ancient language later used chiefly for worship and religious writing. It was adapted for Amharic, Tigrinya, Tigre, Oromo, and other languages. The same syllable series serves several languages, while each language's spelling conventions guide how readers say it.
How do I type ኲ?
On the GFF Amharic layout, type kui. Version 1.9.1 of Keyman's GFF Amharic typing table maps those Latin keystrokes to ኲ. Other Ethiopic layouts may assign a different input sequence; Unicode does not define each keyboard's transient keystrokes.
A font can draw the same encoded syllable with a different outline. Ethiopic text also needs compatible font and shaping support to display correctly; a changed outline does not mean the syllable itself changed.
