What ⷋ means
It is the a-vowel member of Chaha’s palatalized k series. Chaha is a Gurage language; this letter marks a consonant distinction older Ethiopic letters did not represent.
Related palatalized Gurage letters appeared in print in 1966. Ethiopian standard ES-781 formally recognized the Gurage inventory in 2002; the relevant characters entered Unicode in 2005. The early label “Sebatbeit” reflected publication focused on the Gurage variety Sebat Bet; orthographic records describe the added letters as shared across Inor, Mesqan, Sebat Bet, and Sodo. Qya, Xya, and Gya name related palatalized series for different consonants, not alternate spellings of ⷋ.
