ethiopic syllable kyu

Ethiopic Syllable Kyu

60/79

ⷉ writes the syllable kyu in Sebatbeit, a language-specific use of Ethiopic writing; the syllable combines k with a vowel. It belongs to the extended Ethiopic set for languages the basic inventory does not fully cover. It is specialized, so an ordinary Amharic keyboard may not offer it.

What ⷉ means

It writes the Sebatbeit syllable kyu.

ⷉ is used in Sebatbeit, an Ethiopic orthography—a language's spelling system. It combines the consonant k with a vowel; kyu is the syllable reading.

The extended Ethiopic set adds spellings for languages the basic inventory did not cover fully. Unicode's 2004 proposal described these additions as characters then in current use for languages including Sebatbeit, so this sign points to a particular spelling tradition.

Where does ⷉ come from?

It belongs to an evolving script tradition, not a one-off sign.

Ethiopic writing has a historical relationship to South Arabian writing, an older script used in southern Arabia, though scholars dispute the exact route of influence. Its syllable-based system, where consonant signs take different forms for vowels, developed in the 3rd and 4th centuries.

The extended alphabet's documentary trail includes a 1991 record. It has parallel syllable series built around k, q, x, and g. Ge'ez became mainly liturgical, while Ethiopic writing was adapted for languages in Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Why does ⷉ look different or refuse to type?

Fonts and keyboards can differ even when the character does not. A missing font may show a box instead of the glyph. Unicode allows variant Ethiopic forms, so a different outline can still represent ⷉ.

The GFF Amharic Typing Manual 1.6 maps ⷉ to kyu in its Sebatbeit chart and recommends a Unicode Ethiopic layout for letters outside Amharic. A basic Amharic keyboard may omit it; choose a layout that includes Sebatbeit.

Alone in a chat, it may look like a stray letter or a font problem.

Drift: As of 2025, ICANN's repertoire table labels ⷉ “limited or declining use” for Sebatbeit; that is a language-use classification, not a verdict that the character is universally obsolete.

Why does ⷉ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Ethiopic Extended block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.

Why is ⷉ a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
