What ፇ means

It is an Ethiopic syllable sign for an extended spelling. ፇ marks a syllable with an open “o” vowel [ɔ] in an encoding proposal for Me’en, Mursi, and Suri. This is an open form of the “o” sound; exact pronunciation belongs to each language. “Tzoa” is a chart label, not a universal reading.

Ethiopic writing is attested from the 4th century. It grew from a South Arabian-derived consonant tradition into an abugida: a system in which a sign’s form indicates its vowel as well as its consonant. The script first recorded Ge’ez; its vowel-bearing form also helped newly literate Christian readers read biblical texts.

The script now writes Amharic, Tigre, Oromo, and other languages. The neighboring ፀ–ፆ Tza series is an orthographic relation; those signs are not interchangeable with ፇ.

Why was ፇ added?

It adds a syllable form for an open-o distinction. The 2004 Unicode proposal ties this entry to an open [ɔ] syllable in Me’en, Mursi, and Suri. Ethiopic writing groups syllables into consonant-vowel series, so an added form lets the script mark distinctions needed by additional languages.

A keyboard designed for another Ethiopic language may not offer every extension, even though the writing system is shared across languages.

How do I type ፇ?

Use a Unicode Ethiopic layout that includes this extended entry. Unicode does not prescribe a keystroke for ፇ. Ethiopic input usually maps consonant-and-vowel keystrokes to syllabic characters; the mapping depends on the layout.

A square usually means the font lacks this character’s Ethiopic coverage. Adjacent Ethiopic signs remain separate text characters; they do not fuse into a new sign.

A writing-system sign whose reading belongs to the language and word where it appears.

Treat “Tzoa” as a chart label, not a pronunciation guide.
