ethiopic syllable xu

Ethiopic syllable Xu

ኁ is a syllable sign in Ethiopic writing, so it has no word meaning by itself. The script grew from South Arabian; its earliest known attestation is at Dakhanamo. Around the fourth century, vowel marks turned consonants into syllable signs. King Ezana’s inscriptions record Geʿez in South Arabian letters and in Ethiopic writing without vowel marks.

What ኁ means

It marks a syllable; the word carries the meaning.

The Ethiopic writing system, often called fidel, uses signs that join a consonant and vowel into a syllable. Amharic may use ኁ, ሁ or ሑ for the same syllable; classical Geʿez keeps those spellings distinct.

Why does ኁ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
