ethiopic syllable yu

Ethiopic Syllable Yu

216/358

ዩ writes the “yu” syllable in Ethiopic writing; it is one syllable, not a whole word. It appears inside Amharic, Tigrinya, and other Ethiopic-language words, so the surrounding text supplies the meaning. A phonetic Ethiopic keyboard can enter it with yu.

Text symbol

What ዩ means

It writes the yu syllable, not a whole word.

A fidel is an Ethiopic syllable sign combining a consonant and a vowel: ዩ pairs y with u. The word and language around it supply the full meaning, whether the text is Amharic, Tigrinya, or another language written in this script.

Other forms in the y-series change the vowel: የ, ዩ, ዪ, ያ, ዬ, ይ, ዮ. These are separate syllables, not font variants.

How did Ethiopic writing become syllabic?

It evolved from ancient South Arabian consonant writing.

Early Ethiopian and Eritrean inscriptions include pseudo-Sabaean consonant writing—local inscriptions using South Arabian-like signs—from the 8th/7th centuries BC. This is part of the script’s ancestry, not the exact ዩ syllable form; the historical connection is more than a visual resemblance.

An Ethiopian consonant script used for Ge'ez, a language, is attested in the 1st–3rd centuries AD. Around the 4th century, vowel marks reshaped consonant signs into syllable forms. This created an abugida: a writing system in which each sign combines a consonant with a vowel.

Amharic adopted the Ethiopic script by the 13th or 14th century. In the early 20th century, Amharic became a language of elementary instruction and was declared a national language in Ethiopia.

How do I type ዩ?

On a phonetic Ethiopic keyboard, type yu.

The GFF/Keyman mnemonic layout maps those two keystrokes to ዩ; other phonetic layouts may differ. For another Ethiopic language, use a keyboard for that language or a Unicode Ethiopic layout.

Neutral as writing: ዩ is a syllable, and the surrounding word supplies its meaning.

Read it as part of a word; the glyph alone is not a translation.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ዩ show as a square?

Your font likely lacks Ethiopic support. Switch to an Ethiopic-supporting font; a keyboard setting cannot supply a glyph the font does not contain.
