What │ means
Use a character picker or Unicode lookup. Search for U+FFE8; in source code, use the Unicode escape supported by your language or tool.
An earlier setting for this kind of narrow line was Japan’s 1969 JIS X 0201, a fixed-width character set for exchanging Japanese text. A later IBM Code Page 897 mapping carried a corresponding line graphic in its C0 replacement area. Unicode preserves │ as a narrow compatibility form related to │.
What does │ mean when someone sends it?
It usually marks layout, not a message by itself. Read a lone │ as a narrow stroke; inside a divider or text drawing, its width helps align the design.
A 2013 Clip Studio support thread records a drawing workaround: set two copies close together to make one longer vertical rule. That example is a layout fix, not evidence of a general chat convention.
Use │ only when its width matters
For a standard box-drawing line, use │; for a full CJK-width cell, use |; | is the ASCII pipe. Their different widths can shift columns.
Unicode normalization can map compatibility characters to their underlying forms and erase width distinctions. Avoid │ in identifiers or protocol tokens unless a format requires it.
Technical and niche; read its width as layout information, not a mood.
For ordinary box edges, a width mismatch can break the alignment.

1Questions people ask
1Why does │ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.

A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
