뺄

hangul syllable bbael

Hangul Syllable Bbael

뺄 is a Korean syllable block, not a standalone emoji or mood signal. In Korean text it appears inside words such as 뺄셈 (“subtraction”) and as the noun-modifying form of 빼다, “to remove, take out, or subtract.” To type it, use a Korean IME and enter ㅃ, ㅐ, then ㄹ; its block may look different across fonts because Hangul components are rearranged inside a fixed cell.

What 뺄 means

뺄 is a word part, not a standalone message. In 뺄셈, it helps make the ordinary word for “subtraction.” Before a noun, 뺄 is the modifier form of 빼다, marking something that will be removed, taken out, or subtracted; the noun supplies the object.

뺄 has no separate pictorial origin to decode. The National Hangeul Museum says the first record of Hunminjeongeum appears in the Sejong Sillok in 1443, while the explanatory book published in 1446 describes initial, medial, and final sounds assembled into syllables. Hangul was made to write Korean speech; this block belongs to that compositional system.

As of 2026, I found no documented period-by-period reinterpretation or independent ritual use for this exact block. Its relatives are the component jamo and other Hangul syllable blocks, not a picture-symbol that changed meaning across cultures. To produce it, enter the same parts as ㅃ + ㅐ + ㄹ.

how do you type 뺄?

Use a Korean IME: ㅃ, then ㅐ, then ㄹ. The IME assembles those letters into one syllable block.

On a standard two-set Korean layout, ㅃ is the shifted tense form of ㅂ. Switch the input mode to Hangul first; otherwise your Latin keys stay Latin. Enter onset, vowel, and final consonant in that order. Copy it from the palette above if typing stalls.

why does 뺄 look different from the letters I typed?

The font can change the block’s proportions, not its underlying reading. Hangul typefaces reposition each component according to its role inside the syllable cell.

A crowded font may compress or shift the vowel and final ㄹ, so the same syllable looks unfamiliar in another typeface. That is rendering, not a different Korean character.

Neutral in Korean writing; alone in a message, it reads as incomplete text rather than a mood signal.

Do not treat 뺄 as an emoji reaction; find the surrounding Korean word.

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
