Hangul Syllable Cwid

On a Korean two-set Dubeolsik keyboard, enter c-n-l-e to form 췯: c enters ㅊ, n l form ㅟ, and e adds final ㄷ. It is a Hangul syllable block; a complete Korean word supplies the meaning. Its jamo (Korean letter components) can appear separately when text is decomposed.

What 췯 means

Use a Korean input method (IME): enter ㅊ, ㅟ, then final ㄷ.

With the Dubeolsik layout on QWERTY, the Korean keyboard sequence is c-n-l-e: c enters ㅊ, n l form ㅟ, and e adds final ㄷ. The input method joins these jamo into the Hangul syllable block 췯.

Does 췯 have a meaning?

It represents one syllable; the word around it supplies the definition.

췯 combines three jamo, the Korean letter components that form Hangul blocks: initial ᄎ, vowel ᅱ, and final ᆮ. In a word, that syllable contributes to the spoken form; the full word carries the lexical meaning.

Hangul was designed to represent Korean speech: its development was completed in 1443, and an explanatory manuscript appeared in 1446. Early Korean texts mixed Hangul with Hanja (Chinese characters used in Korean writing). By the 1990s, Hangul-only writing was the norm in South Korea; North Korea followed a different path.

Why does 췯 look different in different fonts?

The character is the same; fonts arrange its parts differently.

Hangul type design places component letters inside a square syllable cell. Fonts can change their proportions and stroke details without changing the character. If software displays the jamo separately, it is showing the components instead of the precomposed block.

Unicode normalization—a way to standardize text—can convert between the decomposed sequence 췯 and the precomposed block. Text segmentation should still keep the sequence together as one perceived syllable.

Questions people ask

2

Is 췯 a Korean word?

No. It is a single syllable block; Korean words can contain it, and the surrounding word determines its lexical meaning.

Why does 췯 split into jamo?

Because the display is exposing the three jamo 췯 separately. Unicode normalization, a text-processing step, can convert that sequence into the precomposed block 췯.
