What 츄 means
By itself, 츄 has no fixed word meaning.
A standalone 츄 gives you one sound, but not enough to identify a Korean word. Its sound is roughly “chyu,” with a quick y glide into the vowel. If someone sends only 츄, read it as a fragment unless the conversation makes its role clear.
Where does 츄 come from?
It combines the Hangul letters ㅊ and ㅠ. Hangul groups consonants and vowels into syllable blocks.
Hangul was devised at the court of Korean king Sejong in 1443 and explained in Hunminjeongeum, a book published in 1446. Its alphabet gave Korean speakers a way to write their language without relying solely on Chinese characters.
A Korean syllable can also be stored as a sequence of joining Hangul letters: ᄎ begins the syllable and ᅲ is its vowel. Fonts may arrange the letters differently inside the block, changing their shape, placement, or size without changing the syllable.
When should I write 추 instead?
The established spelling of each word decides.
Guidance for Korean spellings of foreign words in 2025 uses 추 rather than 츄 after ㅊ in some cases, and describes shifts from older spellings with 츄 to 추. The sound alone cannot settle a word’s standard spelling, so check its established form.
Neutral as part of Korean words; in some loanwords, 츄 may signal a nonstandard spelling.
A lone 츄 does not by itself reveal the sender’s mood.
