hangul syllable cyung

Hangul Syllable Cyung

8730/11172

With Korean input active, type ㅊ, then ㅠ, then ㅇ; the input method joins them into 츙. In historical Korean writing, 츙 records a Korean reading of 衝, a Chinese character used in Korean, rather than a stand-alone translation. Translate the surrounding word, not this block alone.

What 츙 means

Type ㅊ, ㅠ, then ㅇ with Korean input active.

On the standard two-set Korean keyboard, c, b, and d enter ㅊ, ㅠ, and ㅇ; the input method combines them into one block. In order, they supply the initial consonant, vowel, and final consonant.

The 1448 pronunciation dictionary Dongguk Jeongun (동국정운) gives 衝 as 쵸ᇰ. The 1576 character-learning book Sinjeung Yuhap (신증유합) records 츙 as a Middle Korean reading of the same Chinese character. Middle Korean is an earlier stage of Korean; the forms show its transcription changing over time.

What does 츙 mean?

It records an older Korean reading, not a standalone translation.

Hangul, the Korean writing system, was created in 1443 and formally promulgated in 1446. It builds syllable blocks by grouping consonant and vowel letters. In books teaching Chinese characters, a block like 츙 supplied the character's Korean reading.

The 1576 source records 츙 for a reading of 衝 that later corresponds to modern 충. The spellings are not interchangeable in other words; use the surrounding sentence to translate it.

Why does 츙 sometimes look wrong?

A font can show a neighboring syllable by mistake.

Sandoll Cloud reported in 2022 that one font release swapped 층 and 츙: entering 층 could display 츙. The notice said a correction was scheduled for 16 March 2022. If an image differs from its source text, check the underlying text in another font.

Historical and technical; without context, it reads like a spelling question rather than a reaction.

Do not assign it a modern translation without the surrounding word.

츙 vs 충

The 1576 source records 츙 as a Middle Korean reading of 衝 that later corresponds to modern 충. The link is specific to that historical reading; do not swap them in other words.

Can a font show 츙 by mistake?

Yes. Sandoll reported the 층/츙 swap in 2022; if a screenshot conflicts with the source text, check the text in another font before interpreting it.
