hangul syllable deun

Hangul Syllable Deun

2273/11172

든 marks an open choice: “either,” “any,” or “whether.” It usually shortens -든지, so the surrounding word supplies the translation. The trap is 던, which points to a past or remembered situation.

Text symbol

What 든 means

It leaves the choice open. Usually shortened from -든지, 든 attaches to a noun or verb: 뭐든 means “anything”; 가든지 말든지 means “whether you go or not.” Alone, it is a grammatical fragment.

Its history is Hangul’s, not a separate emblem’s. The first surviving record of Hunminjeongeum is in 1443; its explanatory book appeared in 1446. As of 2026, no opened source supports a separate inventor, symbolic origin, or cross-cultural meaning for 든 itself.

Neutral grammar; it marks choice, not a pictorial reaction.

든 vs 던: use 든 for choice, 던 for the past.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 든 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
