What 둑 means
It means a raised bank or embankment.
It can mean an embankment beside a river or reservoir, a raised strip protecting farmland, or a raised route such as a railway bed.
A Korean dictionary traces the word to the Middle Korean form 언, recorded in Hunmong jahoe, a Chinese-character primer published in 1527. This dates an earlier word form, not the beginning of the word or the exact appearance of its old spelling.
Why does 둑 sound different in 둑이 and 둑만?
The spelling stays the same; Korean sound rules change what you hear.
When the vowel-starting ending 이 follows, final ㄱ links into the next syllable: 둑이 is pronounced 두기, approximately “doo-gee.” Before the nasal consonant ㅁ in 만, ㄱ becomes nasal: 둑만 sounds 둥만, roughly “doong-man.” These are spoken forms; the spelling remains 둑이 and 둑만.

1Why does 둑 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
