What 엀 means
On the standard Korean two-set keyboard, type d, j, f, t.
In a Korean input method, those keys enter ㅇ ㅓ ㄹ ㅅ; it groups ㄹ ㅅ as the final consonant cluster in 엀. If an app keeps 엀 separate, Unicode NFC normalization, a text-processing form that joins Hangul letters into one block, recombines it.
What does 엀 mean?
It is a Hangul syllable block, with no standalone word meaning. Hangul is the Korean writing system; its letters, called jamo, combine into syllable blocks. 엀 has initial ㅇ, which is silent at the start of a syllable, the vowel ㅓ, and final cluster ㄽ. A word containing it supplies the meaning; the block alone does not name an idea.
A font can reshape or reposition the jamo inside the block while leaving the encoded character unchanged.
When did Hangul first appear?
The historical record of Hangul reaches back to 1443. The Hunminjeongeum, a book explaining the new writing system, was formally published in 1446. Hangul was designed to represent Korean sounds directly, so people could write Korean without relying on Chinese-character writing or borrowed spellings.
Hangul first coexisted with Hanja, Chinese characters used to write Korean, then spread through letters, literature and Buddhist books. It appeared in official documents by the late 19th century. Phags-pa, a square script made in the 13th century for Mongol rule, is proposed as an influence on Hangul, not a settled ancestor.
