hangul syllable gej

Hangul syllable gej

163/11172

By itself, 겢 is a Hangul syllable block, not a complete Korean word with a fixed meaning. Hangul combines letters called jamo into blocks for Korean syllables, so this character usually spells part of a word. Unicode can compose it from the base syllable 게 plus final jamo ᆽ.

What 겢 means

It spells one syllable within Korean text. On its own, it does not identify a complete word; the surrounding Korean letters supply the meaning.

Hangul was devised in 15th-century Korea under King Sejong to write Korean speech in a system tailored to its sounds, rather than relying only on Chinese characters. The earliest official record of Hangul is a 1443 entry in the Sejong Sillok, the annals of King Sejong; the 1446 book Hunminjeongeum explains the script's design. The modern spelling system is based on a unified proposal from 1933 and was partly revised in 1988. 겢 is one combination in this writing system, not a separate symbol with its own origin.

Why does 겢 form one block?

Hangul arranges letters, called jamo, into syllable blocks. In Unicode's composition process, the base syllable 게 can take final jamo ᆽ to form 겢; its spelling sequence is initial ㄱ, vowel ㅔ, and final ㅈ.

A Korean IME (input method editor) can assemble the syllable as you enter those parts. Text encoded as separate, joining jamo may also be shaped into a block, but the font and text system determine whether the parts join. The precomposed 겢 remains together as one character.

Orthographic and neutral; read 겢 as one syllable in Korean spelling.

Do not infer a complete word from 겢 alone; read the surrounding Korean text.

Questions people ask

2

Is 겢 an emoji?

No. 겢 is Hangul text for a Korean syllable, not an emoji or reaction icon.

Why can its jamo appear separately?

They can if the text stores Hangul letters separately or the font and text system do not join them into a block. The precomposed form keeps 겢 together.

Why is 겢 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
