What 겡 means
In 겡국, 겡 names soup served at a Korean ancestral rite. Jeju is a Korean island; a 2017 oral-history record from there documents the compound.
In records from the Joseon dynasty, Korea's former royal era, 갱 appears as 羹, a Hanja character (a Chinese character used in Korean), for both everyday and ritual soup.

1Why does 겡 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
