The syllable 겠 appears in -겠-, before the ending that closes a sentence. It can mark a decision, a judgment about a situation, or a listener’s willingness in a question.
A 2002 analysis traces -겠- to -게 엿- (“decided to make something happen”), shortened to -게엿-. Its planned sense grew into prediction, intention, inference and possibility. A study of Korean letters from around the 19th century found -리- more common than the newer -겠-.
Indirectness can soften a statement; speech level carries respect.
Don't read -겠- as only “will”: it can also mean “must,” “seems likely,” or “would.”
