What 거 means
거 is the conversational form of 것, usually “thing” or “one.”
In 할 거야 (hal geoya), 거 is part of a verb construction for a plan or prediction; the grammar supplies the reading.
Hangul, the Korean writing system, was designed to make Korean easier to write and learn. It is documented in 1443; the explanatory book Hunminjeongeum was published in 1446.
Ordinary in conversation; formal writing tends to use the fuller form 것.
A bare 거 rarely settles the translation; read the phrase.

1Does 거 always mean “thing”?
No. Possession and verb constructions can change the reading; the neighboring words decide.

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
