What 많 means
It means “many” or “much” inside Korean words.
On its own, 많 is a written syllable, not a pictorial sign or a universal chat reaction. It is the stem in 많다 (“to be many or much”), and it changes form when Korean endings follow it: 많아 means “there are many” or “it is a lot,” while 많은 comes before a noun.
Historically, the word is traced to 만ᄒᆞ다 in the 1447 Yongbi eocheonga. Hangul was created in 1443 and promulgated in 1446 so Korean speakers could write their language more easily than with Chinese characters; its syllable blocks assemble consonants and vowels into one visual unit. The historical connection is Korean’s earlier Chinese-character writing environment, not the visually adjacent Unicode syllables.
why does 많 sound different?
The final ㄶ reacts to the ending that follows it.
Before ㄷ in 많다, the ㅎ combines with the next consonant, giving the standard pronunciation [만타]. Before vowel-initial -아 in 많아, ㅎ drops and the result is [마나]. Korean pronunciation guidance also gives 많고 as [만코]. Keep ㄶ in the spelling even when you do not hear a full ㅎ.
how do I type 많?
Use a Korean IME and enter ㅁ, ㅏ, then ㄶ.
On a 2-set layout, type a k s g: a gives ㅁ, k gives ㅏ, and sg makes final ㄶ. The IME composes those jamo into 많. Unicode also treats the composed block and its jamo sequence as canonically equivalent, but text tools should keep the syllable block as one grapheme for selection and line breaking.
Neutral Korean spelling. The tone comes from the word and ending around it, not from the block alone.
An isolated 많 usually looks unfinished, not like a playful “many” emoji.
