What 믿 means
믿- is a Korean verb stem meaning “believe” or “trust.”
믿다 means accepting something as true, relying on someone, or believing in a religion. 믿음 means “belief” or “trust”; 믿어 and 믿고 are other forms. Alone, 믿 is usually not a full reply.
Why does 믿 change sound?
Hangul blocks stay fixed; some endings change the final sound.
Hangul combines Korean letters into syllable blocks: 믿 has opening consonant ㅁ, vowel ㅣ, and final consonant ㄷ. The guide 훈민정음 explains how to write spoken Korean; it was recorded in 1443 and explained in 1446. Those dates belong to Hangul, not 믿.
In 믿다, the ㄷ at the start of 다 is pronounced tense; in 믿어, final ㄷ links to the next vowel; in 믿는, it becomes ㄴ before ㄴ.
