Text symbol

What 밀 means

Alone, 밀 means “wheat.” A Korean text from 1466 records an older spelling, 밀/밇; 밀가루 means “wheat flour.”

Typing 밀 on a Korean keyboard: enter ㅁ, ㅣ, ㄹ; the input method joins them. Hangul was devised in 1443; its guide, Hunminjeongeum, appeared in 1446. Whole words set the meaning: 밀다 means “push,” 밀물 is an incoming tide, and 밀수 means “smuggling,” using the Korean reading of Chinese 密 (“secret”). Unicode can store the component letters (jamo) separately; fonts shape them together as one block.

Its social tone comes from the full Korean word.

1

Why does 밀 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
