What 먀 means

먀 is one Korean syllable, roughly “mya,” not a fixed translation. It combines ㅁ, the consonant sound “m,” and ㅑ, the vowel sound “ya.” Read them together as one syllable; the surrounding Korean word supplies the meaning.

Hangul organizes Korean consonants and vowels into syllable blocks. The first record of the script, called 훈민정음 (“Correct Sounds for the Instruction of the People”), appears in the records of King Sejong’s court in 1443; an explanatory book followed in 1446. Hangul was designed to make Korean easier to write and learn. Before it, Korean writing used Chinese characters and Korean systems adapted from them, including Idu, Gugyeol and Hyangchal.

Why does 먀 appear in Japanese names?

Korean foreign-word spelling writes Japanese ミャ as 먀. ミャ is the Japanese kana for the “mya” sound, so 먀 can transcribe that sound in a Japanese name or term; it does not make the name Korean.

Neutral as Korean spelling; playful when used inside a cat-sound expression.
