What 넹 means
It means “yes” or “okay,” with a cute, softened chat tone.
In a 2025 answer, the National Institute of Korean Language called 넹 a cute way to say 네 and said you cannot automatically treat it as a put-down toward an older person. That settles the meaning, not the mood: in work chat the same extra letter can make your reply yes feel breezy.
Save it for relationships that already allow playfulness. For a boss, client, or serious confirmation, choose 네 or 알겠습니다 when you want zero tone gamble.
Where did 넹 come from?
No first inventor or single earliest written use is established. As of a 2022 discussion, people may have said forms like 넹 before anyone bothered writing them down. The firm trail starts in messenger chat, not in old books.
A 2017 study of 159 KakaoTalk chat rooms documented 17 variants of 네 and 예, including 넹. A 2018 study of Korean student SNS messages likewise records 네 becoming 넹 and describes the added ㅇ as a softener for typed endings. The trick was simple: put voice and warmth back into flat text.
In a 2024 survey, younger respondents chose 넹 more often than older respondents when replying to an older person; it measured stated choices, not message logs. Its siblings are 네, 넵, 넴, and doubled forms: different dials on the same yes.
Someone sent me 넹—what does it mean?
Read it as agreement first; the extra letter usually softens it.
It is not a fixed “I will do it right now” code. A 2017 workplace interpretation joked that 넹 was provisional acknowledgement rather than action, but that is office humor, not a rule. Doubling it toward 넹넹 turns the dial to bubblier and more eager; the sender’s normal style decides the rest.
Soft and chatty in casual messages; 2025 guidance treats it as cute, not inherently disrespectful.
For formal work, use 네 or 알겠습니다 when you cannot afford a playful reading.

1Can I send 넹 to a boss?
Usually, yes, but it is not the safest neutral choice. In 2025, the National Institute of Korean Language said 넹 is not automatically a put-down; it can still sound cute or light, so use 네 or 알겠습니다 when tone matters.
