What 펑 means

A sharp Korean sound word for a pop or burst.

With the Korean verb 터지다 (“to burst”), 펑 터지다 suggests a sudden burst; with 뚫리다 (“to open up”), 펑 뚫리다 can describe a large hole appearing or a blockage clearing.

King Sejong promulgated Hangul in 1446, and the guide Hunminjeongeum explained its design. The alphabet was designed to be easy to learn; its consonant and vowel letters combine into blocks like 펑.

A compact sound word: light for a harmless pop, alarming in a damage report.

Alone, 펑 can sound like a burst of damage.

Why does 펑 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
