What 렫 means
It is a Korean syllable block; its role depends on the word.
Hangul writes Korean by arranging letter parts, called jamo, into syllable blocks. Unicode decomposes 렫 into ᄅ + ᅧ + ᆮ: an initial consonant, a vowel and a final consonant. “Hangul Syllable Ryeod” in Unicode's name labels that assembly; it is not a translation or a pronunciation guide.
The final part, ᆮ, is batchim. At a word end or before another consonant, it sounds like a short “t” with no release. Before a vowel in the next syllable, Korean pronunciation can carry it into that syllable; the whole word determines the reading.
What does 렫 mean when someone sends it?
By itself, it does not reveal the sender's intended message.
Read it within any surrounding Korean word. If 렫 arrives alone, ask whether it was a word fragment or an input test; the block itself does not establish a mood or code.
Why was Hangul created?
Korean ruler King Sejong created Hangul in 1443; the 1446 book Hunminjeongeum explained the script's purpose and design. Before Hangul, Korean was written with Chinese characters and systems such as Idu, Gugyeol and Hyangchal, which adapted those characters to represent Korean speech. The new script was designed to make reading and writing Korean more accessible.
The script's public role changed over time: it became Korea's official national writing system in 1894, then lost that status under Japanese rule after 1910. Records place the name Hangeul in use by the early 1910s, and it became widespread in 1928. South Korea commonly calls it Hangeul; North Korea commonly calls it Chosŏn'gŭl. Scholars debate whether the Mongol-era Phags-pa script influenced Hangul; resemblance alone does not prove direct descent.
Neutral Korean text: its reading depends on the word around it.
Alone, it can look like a fragment of Korean input.

1Why does 렫 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
