heavy horizontal fill

Heavy Horizontal Fill

151/249

🮗 is a block fill tile for terminal graphics, filling part of a fixed-width text cell. Groups of such cells form maps and text art.

Text symbol

What 🮗 means

It fills part of a cell in larger text graphics.

This drawing style is older than the Unicode character. Early teletext in the early 1970s used blocks as rough pixels for weather maps, charts, and pictures. A cell is one character-sized spot in the screen grid. Home computers used similar cells when screens could not draw arbitrary pixels; Unicode preserves such patterns to represent those systems in text.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 🮗 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
