hebrew mark lower dot

Hebrew Lower Dot

53/88

The lower punctum is a special mark in the Hebrew Bible, not a vowel. In Psalm 27:13 it appears beneath לולא (“unless”), alongside extraordinary dots above the same word. Its purpose remains disputed.

Text symbol

What ׅ means

It marks wording that drew special attention in the Hebrew Bible. Rabbinic writings discuss puncta extraordinaria by the second century CE. One explanation treats the dots as signs for wording considered for erasure. The Masoretic tradition, which preserved the Hebrew Bible’s text, kept them; rabbinic interpreters gave them significance.

Hebrew lower-dot rendering varies by edition and font. Vowel and chanting marks can crowd Psalm 27:13; some layouts need extra line spacing.

Specialist biblical notation, not a vowel point.

It does not mark a vowel.

Why does ׅ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
