What means
From the Sharp MZ European alternate set. The Sharp MZ was a home-computer line; its European set included a sideways ladder game graphic. Unicode mapped the old glyph so legacy text, emulators, and text-mode graphics could survive conversion.
What does BA mean in an old computer file?
It is the glyph’s byte value in Sharp MZ (EU Alt). That value works only when software reads the European alternate character set; in another encoding, BA can mean something else. An emulator needs the matching character-set mapping, not the bare byte.

Questions people ask
1Why does show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
