ideographic description character surround from left

Ideographic description character: surround from left

8/16

⿷ means that one part of a Han character surrounds another from the left, leaving the right side open. It is a structural instruction used in an ideographic description sequence (IDS): ⿷匚王 describes 匡. The symbol tells you how the parts fit together, not how to pronounce the character.

Text symbol

What ⿷ means

Read the enclosing part first, then the part inside.

In ⿷匚王, ⿷ gives the arrangement, 匚 supplies the frame, and 王 goes inside it to describe 匡. The enclosure runs along the left, top and bottom. This is a description of the finished shape, not an instruction about stroke order.

Han characters are the Chinese-origin characters used in Chinese, Japanese and Korean writing. An ideographic description character (IDC) such as ⿷ lets you describe their structure using smaller parts. This is particularly useful for recording a character that has no encoded form of its own; the example 匡 shows that encoded characters can be described too.

Technical and neutral: a notation for character structure.

Worth knowing

  • The modern set of ideographic description characters draws on a Chinese standard and the practice of analysing characters into components.

Questions people ask

1

Will typing ⿷匚王 automatically produce 匡?

Not necessarily. Software can show the sequence as separate characters or interpret it to draw the described shape. The sequence remains different text from the single character 匡.

Why is ⿷ a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
