What ⿸ means
Read the enclosing part first, then the part inside. ⿸ introduces two components in an ideographic description sequence, or IDS: a written recipe for a character’s shape. The first component extends across the top and down the left of the second, leaving the enclosure open toward the lower right.
For example, ⿸厂人 describes 仄. 厂 is the outer part and 人 sits inside it. ⿸ itself is an instruction about their arrangement; it is not an extra stroke to add to the finished character.
This notation was introduced to describe characters that had no encoded character of their own. It also lets people explain and analyse the structure of existing characters. The operator family came from Chinese character standards and was used in the GBK character encoding.
Technical notation for describing character structure.
Use the actual character in ordinary text when available: its description is a different string and may not match in searches.

Questions people ask
1Why does ⿸厂人 stay as three separate characters?
That is a valid display. An IDS describes a shape; it does not automatically turn into one character. Specialised software can interpret the sequence and draw the combined shape.

⿸\2FF8Why is ⿸ a box on my screen?
fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
Codes and encoding1 code points
A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
