What ⽚ means
⽚ labels the 片 component in radical charts, character-structure notes, and dictionary indexes. A radical is a component that dictionaries use to group characters or help readers find one. In ordinary Chinese or Japanese writing, 片 is the word-bearing form; ⽚ signals a reference or technical context.
The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary compiled around 100 CE during the Eastern Han (25–220 CE), records a form of 片 in small-seal script, an early standardized Chinese writing style. It explains 片 as “split wood” and analyzes its form as half of 木, the character for tree or wood.
Radical 91 groups 版, 牌, 牒, 牖, and 牘 under 片. Across Chinese, Japanese, and Korean character vocabularies, 片 can mean a piece, fragment, or one side; in Chinese it also appears in words for film. These are word senses of 片, not extra meanings of ⽚.
Why does ⽚ look like 片?
They are related forms with separate Unicode identities. The Unicode chart records ⽚ as a compatibility equivalent of 片. Depending on the font, their outlines can look nearly identical, even though software distinguishes them; use ⽚ for radical notation and 片 for the ordinary character.
Technical and lexicographic: ⽚ signals discussion of character structure or radical indexes.
For an ordinary Chinese or Japanese word, use 片; ⽚ signals radical notation.

Questions people ask
1Why does ⽚ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Kangxi Radicals block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
