What ⾵ means
It files Han characters under the wind radical.
A radical is a shared component a dictionary uses to group Han characters, then sort them by the strokes left over. The Kangxi dictionary, a Chinese reference book from the eighteenth century, used this radical system; ⾵ is number 182, called 風部 (“wind section”) in Chinese listings. So ⾵ is an index label, not the ordinary character used to spell a sentence.
Late Shang oracle-bone inscriptions—questions carved on turtle shells and animal bones for divination—include a wind graph later written 鳳, in records asking about wind, possible harm, and rites to quiet it. Its early Western Zhou bronze forms grow more abstract; a recognizable 風 appears in Warring States Chu and Qin manuscripts. ⾵ is the later indexing form of this written tradition.
why does ⾵ look like 風?
The radical form and the full character can share an outline.
⾵ is a dedicated radical character; 風 is the ordinary full character for wind. 风 is the simplified Chinese form of 風, while is the simplified radical form. A font can make the radical and full character look almost alike, so shape alone may not reveal their different roles.
NFKC and NFKD compatibility normalization can change ⾵ to 風, collapsing the radical and ordinary-character distinction. If that distinction matters in stored text, normalization is the trap to watch. In Chinese and Japanese compounds, ordinary 風 also appears in senses tied to style, custom, appearance, illness, rumor, and poetic convention; those are word uses of the full character, not meanings of this radical marker.
what does ⾵ mean when someone sends it?
It points to a radical reference, not a weather report.
Alone, ⾵ most naturally reads as a technical label: someone may be discussing Unicode, a dictionary index, or Han-character structure. Check the surrounding text before reading it as the word “wind.”
For ordinary writing, use 風 or 风. Keep ⾵ for a deliberate radical, dictionary, or Unicode distinction. If its shape appears identical to 風 on your screen, the encoded role can still differ.
Technical and reference-heavy: it signals character indexing or Unicode analysis, not ordinary prose.
Normalization can silently turn ⾵ into 風 when the radical role matters.

3can normalization change ⾵?
Yes. NFKC and NFKD compatibility normalization can turn this radical character into 風, erasing the radical and ordinary-character distinction; preserve the original character when that distinction matters.
why does 風 contain 虫?
It reflects a historical graphic change: early wind forms connect with the graph later written 鳳, while the later 風 shape includes 虫. That component is not a literal claim that wind is an insect.
can I use ⾵ in a Chinese sentence?
Usually, no. Use 風 or 风 for the ordinary word “wind”; ⾵ belongs in an explicit radical, dictionary, character-analysis, or Unicode context.
