What ベ means
The whole word gives “be” its meaning. ベッド means “bed”; ベビー means “baby.”
Where did katakana come from?
It developed as reading help for Chinese texts.
Buddhist readers used abbreviated notes beside Chinese texts in the early 9th century; the forms were becoming standardized by the 12th century. Before the 20th century, borrowed words also appeared in hiragana or kanji. Since the late 1940s, katakana has more firmly marked borrowings from languages other than Chinese.
ベ is neutral; katakana can make the word stand out.
