What ヽ means
Repeat the preceding katakana; ヽ has no sound of its own.
This katakana-repeater, one of the odoriji repeat marks, borrows whatever katakana stands just before it. In 学問ノスヽメ it repeats ス, so the title reads 学問ノススメ.
Its history is evolutionary, not a named invention. Repetition signs were used in Japan before the Nara period; after kana formed in the Heian period, 〻 was first used for kana repetition and later shortened into forms such as ゝ and ヽ. As of 2026, no secure first surviving ヽ is pinned; the evidence supports evolution from 〻, not a single inventor.
Should I use ヽ in a message?
Use it for a source or old-style effect; otherwise repeat the kana.
Kana repeat marks are uncommon in ordinary typed Japanese; handwritten, creative, historical, and quoted contexts preserve them more readily. Keep ヽ when reproducing a source, but write the repeated kana in a normal message unless the old-style texture is intentional.
By itself, ヽ has no preceding kana to repeat. If someone sends only this mark, treat it as a symbol sample or an incomplete message and ask what they meant.
As of 2026, ヽ is a marked choice in ordinary Japanese; quotations, historical spellings, and deliberate old-style writing make it fit.
Do not treat ヽ as a long-vowel mark; it repeats a preceding katakana.

1Questions people ask
1Why can’t I find ヽ on my keyboard?
It is a conversion candidate, not a normal kana key. Type くりかえし, どう, or おなじ in a Japanese IME, then inspect the candidates; if it stays hidden, use the palette.
